Ketug Ketug is an ensemble of between five and seven musicians. The music is equally suited to small to medium interior and exterior spaces without amplification, as a performance with an attentive public, or as an installation with people passing by, as in a gallery. Traditionally this music is not presented in concert form but as part of the general ambience of a ritual or ceremony, reinforcing the relationship between the people and their gods. Ketug Ketug can play ‘ambiently’, or to a seated, attentive audience where we can introduce the music and explain the instruments. For a more in-depth didactic experience we can offer participatory workshops to small groups of five to ten people.
Our repertoire is drawn from Bali Aga villages in Karangasem province : Tenganan, Bungaya, Asak, Ngis, Bugbug and Kedisan. This ancient music, based on fixed cyclic melodies with intricate ornamentation, has been passed on orally through many generations of Bali Aga gamelan players. There’s also an expanding repertoire of new pieces by members of the group who are all creative musicians working in diverse fields of contemporary and experimental music.
The set-up is very simple - empty stage, or a patch of level ground, some rugs large enough to accomodate the instruments and to sit on. For further information and enquiries please use the email link below.
